Recently, a client whose home we offered for sale expressed interest in selling a 1989 Helen Frankenthaler painting from her impressive private art collection. With Thomas Netzel’s relationship at the Sotheby’s Auction House, we were able to connect the property owner to the leading experts in the art world to sell her post-modern painting named “Somnambulist”.
Somnambulist was first displayed at the Sotheby’s Gallery in East Hampton, NY along side other highly important works by such renowned artists including Jackson Pollack and Lee Krasner. The painting was then shipped to the Sotheby’s Auction House in New York City, where it will be offered at the Sotheby’s, September 2022 Contemporary Curated event. This event features works by several trailblazing artists who define the postwar period including Willem de Kooning, Lynda Benglis, Andy Warhol and Philip Guston, as well as innovative players on the forefront of contemporary art including, Julie Mehretu, Dana Schutz, Stanley Whitney and George Condo.
HELEN FRANKENTHALER – Somnambulist, signed, titled, and dated ’89 on the reverse. This acrylic on canvas painting, which measures 74 ½ by 62 inches, was acquired by our client directly from Helen Frankenthaler in 1995. Somnambulist was one of the artist’s favorite pieces painted late in that decade, as it hung in her personal residence.
